Volunteer Corner: Enjoying a beer together after a round of golf:

by Mike Touzeau, Staff Writer

“So, how long you been retired?”

“Bout ten years now.”

“Same for me.”

“Good income?”

“I guess. Enough so I don’t have to worry.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“Can’t believe I’m going to turn 70 next month.”

“I heard. I’m getting closer myself. Next year.”

“You ever think about that?  I mean, 70…wow.”

“Yeah, I used to think 70 was really, really old.”

“Years are just flying by. When I dwell on it I can get really depressed.”

“I hear you. I’m starting to look back a lot more than ahead.”

“Doc says I’m doing okay, though. I could lose a few pounds, but everything’s still working. She says I just have to keep moving.”

“Yeah. We definitely gotta keep moving.”

“Boy, when you stop and think about it, we really do have it made, though, don’t we?

“I suppose you’re right, good health, enough money. No worries, except maybe breaking 80, huh?”

“Ha, I’ll probably never do that.”

“Me neither.”

“Seriously though, lately I wonder if I’m taking it all for granted. Might sound weird, but some mornings I stand in the shower and think to myself…clean hot water every time. I grab breakfast from the frig…plenty of food, whatever I want. I load my expensive clubs from my three car garage into my brand new car. I spend more on a round of golf and dinner in one day than some can probably afford to spend for groceries for a month. I have so much.

“Well, what’s wrong with that? What are we supposed to do? We earned it. We worked really hard all our lives and we’re reaping the rewards for it. Always going to be people in need. You can’t change the whole world.”

“Yeah, I know, but maybe I could at least have a positive effect right here somehow.”

“You mean like giving to a local charity?”

“I was thinking more like actually doing something to make a difference.”

“Like what? Volunteering?”

“Yeah. I have all this time on my hands. Don’t you ever get tired of the same thing—watch TV, play some golf, go out and buy some more stuff you don’t really need? Some days I just sit around and do nothing. With only so much time left, wouldn’t you like to do something that’s, I don’t know, more important than this, be able to give back just a little bit for all that you’re blessed to have?”

“I guess I never thought about it that way.”

“I don’t want to do it out of guilt and I don’t want it to be drudgery or something I really don’t like to do. There has to be something out there where I could help out and also get a kick out of it, kinda look forward to it like golf.”

“You think you’re going to find a volunteer gig like that?”

“Well, I read there’s this clearinghouse, and they say they will help you set it up.”

“Really? Well maybe you should call them.”

“You know what? You’re right. I should quit thinking about it. I should just do it. I’m making the call when I get home.”

We’d love to hear from you, too.
