Bell Ringing
For three weeks starting 8 am November 29 and going until December 24 at 6:00 pm the Salvation Army put out kettles and has volunteers man the kettles and ring the familiar bell outside stores. The shifts for bell ringing are two hours long Monday through Saturday. It is ok to use a chair if you wish to sit. Some share the two hour time period with a friend or spouse. Others take one or two shifts per week as they enjoy greeting people. If you have never been involved, I encourage you to volunteer this year. Churches and organizations can ask to fill time slots for a store for one to three days per week for the season if they wish. Some organizations have chosen a door at a store and have filled all the slots for the entire season. Stores involved are Fry’s, Safeway (Duval Mine Rd. and Continental), Walmart, and Walgreens (Esperanza, Continental, and Duval Mine Rd.).
Please contact us at 625-3888 if you are interested in finding out more about bell ringing or email Holly Faris at Holly.Faris@usw.salvationarmy.org. They would enjoy coming to your organization to explain how you can become involved. Remember, all proceeds from bell ringing stay in our local area!
Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners
The Salvation Army includes everyone in their free yearly dinners those who are alone and want the companionship of having a meal with others, families and children all are welcomed to come regardless of income. Thanksgiving dinner is on November 28th from 12 noon to 2 pm. Christmas Dinner is on Christmas Eve December 24 from 12 noon to 2 pm. Anyone wishing to attend the dinner as a guest should call the Salvation Army to reserve their place at the below phone number.
Volunteers are always needed to decorate and set tables, sign people in, seating host/hostess, cook and clean up staff, serve dinners, and refill coffee/tea/water. It’s fun to do this as a group or a family. Last year we had many families with children who were volunteers!
Christmas Angel Tree
Salvation Army collects gifts for less fortunate children to hand out during the Christmas season. Parents must complete a form for each child to qualify their child to receive gift(s). Boxes are placed in businesses, organizations and churches to collect gifts. We can bring a box to you. The gifts collected can be brought to the Salvation Army so that we can sort them by age category. Or your group can give us a call and we will collect the gifts from you. Volunteers are always needed to assist during this time.
Kids Fair
We just finished up with Kids Care Fair on July 27th. This was conducted by the Salvation Army, together with businesses, organizations and volunteers from our local community. If you had a business or a church or non profit organization, we asked you to consider placing a box in your lobby for those who wished to donate school supplies. Participants in the Kids Fair also were able to have a table at the time of the fair. The Salvation Army purchases and distributes uniforms t-shirts for the children in line with what their school requires. We gathered up these donations and placed them into backpacks for those children needing school supplies and we were able to help approximately 240 children this year. You dropped off donations at the Salvation Army office or called the office and we came out to pick up the supplies. For those who volunteered or donated supplies, we thank you for helping us, and hope you will consider assisting again next year!
Other Volunteer Activities
There are many ways you can volunteer at Salvation Army. You can be an office receptionist or janitor, etc. Help in our booth at the Pecan Festival, or be in the White Elephant Parade. Be a volunteer on our Emergency Disaster Services committee. Volunteer to do office projects or answer phones. Help us sort donated school supplies, or pick up and sort Christmas gifts for Angel Tree.
If you have any questions please call me…God Bless You!
