The Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) is the largest field installation of the Smithsonian Institution Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) outside of Cambridge, MA. Our mission is to provide enlightening experiences that inspire wonder in learning about and engagement with astrophysics, space science, and the science in our daily lives. The Whipple Observatory is YOUR Smithsonian, with a year-round Visitor & Science Center, and seasonal tours.

The Whipple Observatory has volunteer opportunities for front desk/docents, education specialists, tour guides and event volunteers.

  • Tour Guides lead visitors on an all-day behind-the-scenes adventure around the observatory, taking them to telescopes and outbuildings otherwise inaccessible to the public. Tour guides tell the story of the observatory, the telescopes, and the awe-inspiring discoveries that have been made right here in SoAz since 1968.
  • Front desk/Docents provide daily operations for the Visitor & Science Center by answering phones, selling merchandise, taking tour reservations, and providing interpretation of exhibits.
  • Education Specialists engage the public in hands-on science activities and demonstrations to teach difficult concepts in an easy-to-understand way. Education specialists may perform duties both at the Visitor & Science Center or at schools, libraries and other event locations.
  • Event Volunteers engage the public in meaningful discussions during large events at outside venues, and help to run vendor booths/tables for the Observatory. Examples of events, you will have the opportunity to work (and get free access to!) including Festival of Books, SpaceFest, SoAz Culture Fest, and more.

Please contact Amy Oliver, Public Affairs Director, for information about these volunteer opportunities.
